NEW YORK — Congratulations, Yankees. They’re the new MLB recordholder for most injured list stints in a season.
The 2016 Los Angeles Dodgers put 26 players on the IL.
Yankees third baseman Gio Urshela going on Friday with a left groin strain was No. 29.
Somehow, the Yankees have overcome all of this bad luck to build an 88-48 record that ties them with the Houston Astros for the best in baseball through Friday night’s 8-2 loss to the Oakland Athletics.
Sticking with a season-long theme, Urshela was shelved on the same day the Yankees got one of the injured back – first baseman Luke Voit returned Friday for a sports hernia – and by night they lost another player to injury when pitcher CC Sabathia left his start with severe right knee pain.
Saturday returned to the IL on Saturday morning.
“One of the storylines of our season has been losing guys and getting guys back, so it’s just something that we’ve dealt with,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “The guys have done a great job handling it. To a man, those guys have really contributed in large ways across the board. We are probably a little too used to it, but it’s something that everyone doesn’t flinch at and we know we can go out and get ‘er done.”
Here are updates on 10 of the 17 Yankees who currently are on the IL:
DELLIN BETANCES, RHP
Injury: Right shoulder impingement.
Status: Injured list entire season.
Games missed: 136.

The latest: Betances will throw to hitters Saturday in Tampa, then return to New York to avoid Hurricane Dorian and throw to hitters again on Monday at Yankee Stadium. “Then we’ll decide where he goes and what we’ll do from there,” manager Aaron Boone said. The expectation is that Betances could be reinstated from the IL by the second week of September if he stays healthy.

GREG BIRD, 1B
Injury: Left plantar fascia tear.
Status: Injured list since April 16 (retro to April 14).
Games missed: 122.
The latest: Bird’s Yankee Stadium locker recently has been used by other players, but he had one again on Saturday. Why? He’s finally progressing to the point where he may soon resume baseball activities, and he’ll probably be doing some of his rehabbing in New York. The Yankees aren’t ruling out Bird returning this season, but it appears very unlikely at this point. “He’s not baseball activities, but I know he’s feeling ready to go with that,” Boone said. “He’s really been ready to up his workload. He was almost at 100 percent on the Alter-G (on Friday). I know he feels ready to take the next step and get going with baseball activities. We’ll see where that takes us.”

EDWIN ENCARNACION, 1B/DH
Injury: Right wrist fracture.
Status: Injured list since Aug. 3.
Games missed: 27.
The latest: Encarnacion has been taking BP with the Yankees this weekend and could be off the IL before their homestand ends on Wednesday, Boone stated Saturday morning. Encarnacion will report to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday to begin a short rehab assignment early this week. “With Edwin, it looks like it’s imminent in the coming days,” Boone said.

BEN HELLER, RHP
Injury: Tommy John surgery (April 2018).
Status: Injured list entire season.
Games missed: 136.
The latest: Heller sat at 93-94 mph and touched 96 Friday working two shutout innings for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in his 10th rehab outing, the last six in Triple-A. in his latest outing, Heller allowed two hits, struck out two, didn’t walk anyone and picked two runners off first base. He’s fared very well during his rehab games, allowing one run over 12 2/3 innings with 14 strikeouts and no walks. He’s positioned himself to be a strong candidate to rejoin the Yankees in September.

AARON HICKS, CF
Injury: Right flexor strain.
Status: Injured list since Aug. 4.
Games missed: 26.
The latest: Hicks was examined during the Yankees’ game on Friday night and received clearance to resume throwing, which he’s scheduled to do on Monday. He’ll start hitting again by the middle of next week. No timetable for a return has been established, but Hicks appears to be on schedule to be back by the second or third week of September.
